Summer School at the Dodge County Historical Society

Exploring the days of the Rural School"  The school building on the  Dodge County Historical grounds  in Mantorville was a busy place in June.of 2003 - 2006.   Students attended on one of the two weeks.  The students

  • wrote with quill pens
  • performed a Melodrama
  • made apple pies
  • churned butter
  • did recetations
  • visited the museum
  • decorated baskets for a picnic
  • went fishing where they caught a lot of fish
  • toured Wasioja or Mantorville
  • and on the final day took a field trip to Wasioja or to the sites in Mantorville.  On the last day they & their parents sat on the lawn on blankets and  had lunch from their decorated baskets or lunch pails.

This has been a popular event for the 180 entering 2nd - 5th grades.

Day 3: Fishing (make your own pole),; games (parlor and outdoor kinds), and sports.  Divide into small groups to plan a picnic lunch and decorate a box or basket for tomorrow's basket social.  Each basket will be a theme of a holiday (e.g. Valentine's Day, Fourth of July, Halloween or Christmas) and groups will decorate it with paper and ribbons.
Day 4:   Visit to Wasioja to the seminary, recruiting station and cemetery rubbing.  Read "PINK & SAY" BEFORE THE VISIT.  Try a cemetery rubbing.  Return to school to meet parents and join in the basket social picnic on your own blanket.
EVERY DAY; Have a 10 minute session of "Inventions and Contraptions" presented by Idella; 20 minute snack and recess time; 10-20 minute old-fashioned school lesson (e.g. spelling bee, recitation, penmanship).  We'll provide snack so it is authentic to 1890's time period.

Students should dress in old-fashioned clothing- boys can roll up trouser legs; girls will choose a long skirt that will be provided by the school (wear a simple blouse of your own).  Or you may choose to wear your own old fashioned clothing.

We'll watch weather conditions to flip-flop some of the outdoor activities if possible.
